The Secret Life of Negative Thinking

A young man once wrote me about his secret life of negative thoughts and depression.iStock_000019450819_Small

He described his negative thinking as like an 800-pound gorilla, beating him up with nasty put-downs that told him he was no good, he was ugly, and no matter what he tried he could not change.

In a flash, I saw the similarities in what he wrote to how I imagined myself as a shy teenager.

Back then, I saw myself as a princess trapped in a stone tower, with an evil dragon terrorizing me.

No matter how I much I tried to escape the tower, the dragon was there. He had fearsome claws and breathed fire.

My situation depressed me too. Darkness surrounded me and I could not see the way out. I even had suicidal thoughts back then.

But one day, I had a startling revelation and it was the key to my freedom.

It was true that I was the princess. However, I was also the dragon.

The lies I chose to believe about myself and my situation were what kept me trapped.

I always had the power to choose what to believe.

Out of ignorance, I was aligning myself with the devil (the father of lies) who was out to destroy me as God’s precious child.

I praise God today that He showed me the truth and delivered me! Proverbs 23:7 says:

For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.”

I believe that God gave you the imagination to help you strengthen your faith. It is a gift. If you use this gift wisely, you create mental pictures of your better future and encourage yourself moment by moment. You then feel stronger and move forward toward your future with confidence.

However, if you abuse your imagination with pictures that inspire fear, by putting yourself down, or by entertaining worry and negativity then you too will have an 800-pound gorilla standing in the way of the hope and future God wants you to have.

Remember this: As a believer, you have the power of God through Jesus Christ living inside of you.

Not only do you have the ability to take your thoughts captive to the obedience of Jesus Christ, but you have the responsibility to do it.

You might think this is a small habit that hurts only yourself. But it is not. This habit impacts everyone that God has placed in your life for you to bless. You are blessed to be a blessing!

Today, resolve to use your imagination to strengthen your faith and encourage yourself. That way, you will position yourself to receive God’s best as he gives you a future that is better than you can imagine!

But as it is written: ‘Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.'” – 1 Corinthians 2:9
