Comforting During a Crisis

Recent events have left many people feeling dismayed. The word “dismayed” means “to be not able.” Yet, even when we don’t feel able, God is able

We can remain stable during times of shaking and unrest. Here are 3 ways to use our power for comforting during emtional crisis and to reflect God’s glory.

During times of crisis, we can remain stable when we use our God-given power.

You may wonder why I’m even writing about this subject, given that Take Back Your Temple is about overcoming emotional eating and Christian weight loss primarily.

But we are not just bodies – we have a Spirit, a mind, and emotions too.

Our health does not exist in isolation.

When you are troubled emotionally and stressed out, it effects your physical health and habits too.

And for many of us, we tend to run back to destructive habits when under stress!

You need to regain your footing again. The first place to check is your Spiritual foundation.

Ask yourself, “What does the foundation of my life rest upon?”

Does your emotional stability rest upon circumstances, other people’s actions, or even your own abilities?

If so, then you can be shaken in times of crisis.

After all, circumstances can change for the worse and threaten your security.

During times when I feel shaken, I use Psalm 61:2 as a prescription:

“From the end of the earth I will cry to You, When my heart is overwhelmed; Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.”

Jesus is our Rock. In times of emotional distress, it’s wise to hold on to the Rock for dear life

Remind yourself that none of what is happening is a surprise to God.

As His people, we must remember who the real enemy is:

“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.”

Ephesians 6:12

During a crisis, we as God’s people have the opportunity to bring God’s kingdom wherever we go.

His kingdom is righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit – not matter what happens in the world (see Romans 14:17).

Through our Rock, we have power in Him to remain stable when we use our God-given power.

Here are 3 ways:

1. We have the power to pray.

The Bible says that the prayers of the righteous avail much. We have all of the resources of heaven at our disposal when we pray according to God’s will.

Only God has the power to change human hearts. When people’s hearts are changed inwardly, their actions will change outwardly.

2. We have the power to speak God’s word into every situation.

If there was any time in which the world needs to hear life-giving, encouraging words from disciples of Jesus Christ, it is now.

People are hurting, confused, and need answers. So let’s pray for wisdom that we will speak the right words at the right time:

Proverbs 22:21: “That I may make you know the certainty of the words of truth, That you may answer words of truth To those who send to you?”

Luke 21:15: “for I will give you a mouth and wisdom which all your adversaries will not be able to contradict or resist.”

3. We have the power to love and serve.

I told our young group member that we need to first keep our own hearts and minds stayed on the Lord so that we remain in peace.

When our hearts are right, we can minister to others who need comfort and encouragement. God’s perfect love casts out fear.

It’s not just missionaries who have a mission field. We all have one.

While we may not be able to change the world, we can serve those in our families, our communities, our jobs and businesses – whatever territory God has given us.

Let us use our power!

When times are darkest, this is our time to shine the brightest. We are anointed for such a time as this:

Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven”

– Matthew 5:16)

So let us shine on.

Finally, here is my prayer for you according to Ephesians 3:14-21

For this reason I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, from whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man, that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height— to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.”

  • God bless you for your words of encouragement, Kim. These times are filled with fear and uncertainty, not knowing who or what to trust. It is an excellent time for the church to BE the church, shining the light of Lord Jesus to those around us. May many be won into His kingdom during these last days!

    • Amen, Rick – we need to encourage each other to stand firm in the midst of shaking in this world so we can finish well!

  • Thank you so much for your encouragement. God is using you and your abilities to minister to us. I would love to be in your study group if we lived closer together.

  • Thanks for your inspiring words. These times are filled with anxiety in my life. And knowing God is unshaken by events and He is in control helps ease my mind.

    • I needed it too, Debbie and the Lord brought these words to my remembrance. He delivers the right words at the right time.

  • Kimberly and all, here’s a hymn I love, for encouragement! ❤️

    “Let Us All Press On” (hymn)
    1. Let us all press on in the work of the Lord,
    That when life is o’er we may gain a reward;
    In the fight for right let us wield a sword,
    The mighty sword of truth.

    Fear not, though the enemy deride;
    Courage, for the Lord is on our side.
    We will heed not what the wicked may say,
    But the Lord alone we will obey.

    2. We will not retreat, though our numbers may be few
    When compared with the opposite host in view;
    But an unseen pow’r will aid me and you
    In the glorious cause of truth.

    Fear not, though the enemy deride;
    Courage, for the Lord is on our side.
    We will heed not what the wicked may say,
    But the Lord alone we will obey.

    3. If we do what’s right we have no need to fear,
    For the Lord, our helper, will ever be near;
    In the days of trial his Saints he will cheer,
    And prosper the cause of truth.

    Fear not, though the enemy deride;
    Courage, for the Lord is on our side.
    We will heed not what the wicked may say,
    But the Lord alone we will obey.

    • WOW – Thank you for these words, Jessie! They were like a balm to my soul and I’m sure a balm to all who will read them.

  • I really enjoyed this needful word in a time such as this. I remember when I was going through a heart breaking ordeal in my life. I cried a lot, prayed a lot. One day as I was driving from my job I looked up and saw on a church sign, “After all is said and done, only God is in control.” I don’t know how long it had been there, but I do know that on that day God had
    heard my prayers and wanted me to know He had it all under control. I gained such peace that day and let God have my pain and hurt. He truly is always in control!!!

    • Amen, Marie – when the world is shaking around us it helps to remind ourselves that God is never shaken. Only by holding on to Him can we remain stable 🙂

      • Very calming Kimberly. I also like the way you spaced your paragraphs.

        Visually, it is very calming to the eye…

        In teacher lingo it is called figure ground and relates to spatial awareness.

        God gave you wisdom to mark your words in a way that allows the reader to slow down and rest between the paragraphs.

        I can hold on to this!

        Thank you so much. BTW I sent you something funny a minute ago!

  • Thanks for sharing during this difficult time in our nation and around the world. We do have to be rooted and grounded in knowing Jesus Christ as our Peace. One Scripture I have begun to speak over my life is 2 Thes 3:16. Now may the “Lord of peace” (Himself) give you “His peace” at “all times” and in “every situation”.
    2 Thessalonians 3:16 NLT
    Emphasis added

    • Amen, Doris – I am agreeing with on 2 Thessalonians 3:16 and Romans 8:28-31 as well. During this times of shaking, may all of God’s people holding on to His peace and remain standing.

  • Thank you for the encouraging words. With what is going on in the world now I have began to wonder if GOD really cares about us. I know he does care about us but I have been going through a lot lately. Thank you again for your encouraging words.

    • I understand, Janet. It can be hard to walk by faith when you have so many negative things in your sight. The other night, there was a movie on that vexed my spirit so much. I practically ran to the word of God to lift that spirit of heaviness. Faith comes by hearing and by the word of God. Stay on that word, Sister. It’s the only thing that will help you stand in faith when you are going through. I am praying for you.

  • Kimberly
    I agree with others, you are anointed and such a blessing to all of us. Your emails always speak to me at just the right moment and I find myself looking forward to your next email. How exciting to be a messenger for our Lord Jesus Christ! Thank you for everything you do.
    Sharlot

  • Thanks Kim for those words of comfort. I’m really being toss from side to side right now with family. But I know God is my Rock

  • Thank you for allowing the Holy Spirit to minister to you and bless me with this. I have been in such a crisis of my own. Deceit, divorce and despair but God is always on time to be the lifter of my head! Thanks for hearing God and letting Him direct your path. In Jesus Name! I have not been given the spirit of fear but love, power and a sound mind!

    • I am praying for God’s comfort and strength to be with you during this season, Monica! He is the same God on the mountaintop or in the valley. Keep holding on to His unchanging hand and you will make it through victorious.

  • Kim, your anointing is increasing and for that we give thanks to our Lord Jesus Christ.truely this is a word given in due season.
    Matthew 5:9 says.”blessed are the peacemakers, For they shal be called the sons of God”
    In Christian love, Sherry

    • Thanks Betsy. Jesus said, “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world (John 16:33)” The only way we will hold on to our peace is to keep reviewing the words that Jesus spoke to us in His word and to seek His presence for times of refreshing. That’s what I am doing for sure, otherwise these circumstances would leave me drain and dry.
