How to Get Back on Track

Train tracksOne of the most challenging issues I faced in my weight loss journey was how to get back on track when something upset my daily routine – gets me off- track.

What, you don’t have a daily track when it comes to your health choices?

Imagine the chaos that would occur in the world if you had trains running without tracks!

For one thing, the trains would never get to a specific destination. They’d cause damage to existing structures, costing billions of dollars. They’d kill thousands of people.

Many people say that they lack discipline. But the problem is not usually lack of discipline; the problem is lack of a track!

Self-discipline requires a track to run on.

Even the Christian walk has a track to freedom. If you are in bondage to anything, Jesus has the solution:

Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free (John 8:31-32).”

Abiding requires knowing, believing, and doing.

Mike and I traveled this week, so I could not follow my normal health track. However, because I do have a track that I follow at home, it’s easy to recognize when I am off of it, plus easier to get back on it.

Now that I am back home from our travel, I am getting back on track. So I asked myself one question when I woke up this morning:

What can I do now to make it easier for myself to do good later?”

Here are some answers I gave myself – and did:

  • Drank 1 large glass of water
  • Prepare a pitcher of green tea with lemon
  • Defrost chicken and vegetables (I plan to make a stirfry today, probably enough for our lunch and dinner)
  • Put on my workout clothes, shoes, and put workout DVD in the player
  • Put out more apples and oranges in my fruit bowl to have for today’s snacks
  • Fill up my water bottle to sip on throughout the day
  • Start cooking my oatmeal and quinoa for breakfast (that takes about 20 minutes to cook, which is about the length of my workout today). So it will be ready to eat once I’m done
  • Eat an orange as a pre-workout snack

While some health choices are not easy, you can do more than you think you can to make it easier for yourself to make better choices.

Keep the good stuff close and within view so that it’s easier to do; put the bad stuff out of your sight and far away so that it’s harder to do.

So here is my question to you:

What can you do now to make it easier for yourself to do good later?”

Remember: A disciple is one who follows a path (or track) of instruction. No track, no discipline.

More often than not, you can determine a person’s destination through one thing; just inspect their track!

  • If they don’t have a track, they will not go far.
  • If they are on the wrong track, they will end up in a place they don’t want to be

So today, decide on your destination and why you want to go there.

Then, determine the track you are going to take – and stay on it until you arrive where you intended!
