Living on Purpose, ( 2 Timothy 2 Bible Study, Part 1 – Soldier)

I was studying 2 Timothy 2 :3-7 recently in which the apostle Paul counseled his Spiritual son Timothy on how to persevere as Jesus’ disciple:

You therefore must endure hardship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. No one engaged in warfare entangles himself with the affairs of this life, that he may please him who enlisted him as a soldier. And also if anyone competes in athletics, he is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules. The hardworking farmer must be first to partake of the crops. Consider what I say, and may the Lord give you understanding in all things.

Here is a brief 3-part Bible study about the roles of Soldier, Athlete, and Farmer, and how they apply to our lives as Jesus’ disciples too:

  • Soldier: As a soldier of the Lord, we are focused on our assigned mission to share the gospel with those who do not yet know Him. We don’t entangle ourselves in worldly affairs, but prioritize our faith in God who enlisted us as soldiers. We seek His kingdom first (righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit), confident that all other things will be added to us.

Go Deeper: Matthew 13:32-33 and Romans 14:17

Bible Journal Question: How do my natural health habits align daily with my role as a soldier (Spiritually, mentally, and physically)?

If you have been in the military or know someone who has/is, please share any thoughts about how they view their service in the Comments.

Be blessed with health, healing, and wholeness,

Kimberly Taylor

  • Liz Wright says:

    I served 12 years in the Navy. This passage recalls: To serve with Honor, Do the Right Thing, To Stand, Protect & Defend. It recalls the shepherd staff is used not only to guide the shepherd and steer them away from danger but to beat back the enemy using the staff as a weapon. A warrior of Christ is a place of humble service using his shield and living into Ephesians 6. Walk on Sisters In Salvation (my SIS).

    • Kimberly Taylor says:

      Fantastic, Liz! I appreciate your service and so thankful to the men and women in our armed forces who serve and sacrifice each day. As disciples of Jesus Christ, we too are called to serve and sacrifice for our high calling in Him – an honorable position indeed 🙂

  • Jane Wiltshire says:

    Thank you Kimberly I appreciate your studies of the Word. I’m thinking about clothing when I read this and the fact that we’re clothed in royal robes, like a soldier is in uniform. I’m sure that their uniforms remind them of their rank and duties.We are clothed in robes of righteousness (free gift) and we are kitted out with everything we need in our spirits, to go into battle. We’re instantly recognisable to God who is our defence.

    • Kimberly Taylor says:

      Love it, Jane! So true. As Jesus’ disciples, we are meant to be distinct – to stand out and be lights in this dark world. I love your example of clothing because as 1 Peter 2:9 says, “But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;”

      Great words to describe our position as God’s people:

      * Chosen
      * Royal
      * Holy
      * Special

  • Teresa King says:

    Oh my goodness! I have seen a before service and after service view of several young people who have enlisted. Two of them were driving their parents crazy because of their behavior and not applying themselves to school work and/or their jobs. But when they entered the service they learned how to listen to those who were over them, they became so polite and caring about how they were affecting those around them and more diligent about being aware of their surroundings. Then I saw one who couldn’t handle the challenge of listening to others and they discharged. This was a great bible study! Thanks!

    • Kimberly Taylor says:

      Thank you, Teresa! I appreciate your examples and they show the benefits of following wise counsel vs. the consequences of refusing to hear and heed. I appreciate you for sharing your perspective. you for sharing your experience 🙂

  • Renee Pitts says:

    My grandson is preparing to go to the army this year he graduated from high school. I’d asks him do he still want to go , he say yes. Lord guide him and teach him is my prayer for him and this is what him and I pray for.

    • Kimberly Taylor says:

      Amen, Renee – I join you in prayer for your grandson’s safety and success in his service to God and this country!

    • Kimberly Taylor says:

      You are welcome, Barbara – these reminders help us stay focused on the Lord because there is much at stake 🙂
