Recently, I taught our women’s Sunday School class at church and asked the students a question:
Why do we find home improvement or makeover TV shows so fascinating?
Shows like “Fixer Upper” (my personal favorite) and “Flip or Flop” are very popular with TV viewers.
While I received some responses to my question like “It gives me ideas that I can use for my own house,” the majority agreed on one thing:
It is the process of seeing the transformation unfold before our eyes that is satisfying!
These programs follow a specific pattern to illustrate the transformation.
Pay special attention to steps #3 and 4 below because they are usually part of an extreme makeover of any kind:
1. The “Before” state: The program hosts show the home in its previous state. In many cases, the home was neglected for years.
2. The Plan: The hosts state what their plan is to fix up the home.
3. The Challenge: Typically, an obstacle arises during the renovation that the hosts have to overcome.
4. The Solution: The hosts devise a creative solution to the problem and implement it.
5. The “After” state: The program hosts reveal the home with the renovation complete. In many cases, the home looks brand new!
This morning, I was talking with my husband Mike about how a show like “Fixer Upper” was comparable to the weight loss journey.
Then I asked him:
What if the hosts gave up and quit whenever they faced a problem?”
He replied,
Then there wouldn’t be a show. Or else, they’d have to change the name of the show to “Quitter Downer!”
You will face challenges on your weight loss journey. That is why Step 5 of the Take Back Your Temple program is so important: “Expect Tests and Be Prepared.”
I learned on my own journey from a size 22 to an 8 that the journey was not always smooth. Whenever you decide to do something good, your resolve to finish it will always be tested!
But while I would quit when I faced challenges in previous weight loss attempts, the last time I decided in my heart that I would change the script. I would not take the “Quitter Downer” approach!
Instead, I would come up with a solution and implement it, continuing to adjust until the solution worked for my life.
That is why I succeeded. That is your key to success too.
In the Take Back Your Temple program, I share the tests that I faced in my own weight loss journey and all the solutions that I found for them. I am sure these tests will be familiar to you!
Proverbs 11:14 says,
Where there is no counsel, the people fall; But in the multitude of counselors there is safety.”
I hope you decide today that you will persevere through your own weight loss challenges.
Time will reveal the results of your efforts, just like with “Fixer Upper.”
You will gain the benefit of increased energy and better health so that you can better fulfill your God-given purpose!
Be blessed with health, healing, and wholeness,
