The Pitfall: I would often have what I learned to call "diet seizures."
Something would happen that reminded me of how much weight I gained.
Maybe it would be having problems buttoning up a pair of jeans.
Or catching a glimpse of myself in a full length mirror.
Or having to take the stairs and being really out of breath.
When those things happened, I would tell myself "I'm going to start my diet on Monday." I'd pull out an old diet book, really excited.
But either I forgot about it by Monday or I'd only do the diet for a little while.
I'd secretly believe that I could do the diet until I lost weight and then I could go back to eating my old way.
The Way Out: My mistake was the classic dieter's mentality. When you diet, it usually means that it’s something you will do until you lose the excess weight and then you will go back to eating your “normal” way.
And you know what that means—Old Ways, Old Weight!
But I realized this process is not about living a diet. It's about learning to live your life in a way that supports health and energy.
The Change: I started looking at the way I lived my life.
What foods did I buy regularly?
Did they help me or did they hurt me?
I used Biblical wisdom:
“All things are lawful for me, but all things are not helpful. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any (1 Corinthians 6:12).”
My goal was to find my healthy sweet spot - foods that tasted good and were good for me. There were plenty of foods that were nutritious and delicious.
Up until that point, what I cared about mostly was that the food tasted good whether it was good for me or not.
I cared more about what I put on my body than what I put in my body!
I checked my reason for wanting to change. It had to go beyond just looking or feeling good. It reached all the way down to my relationship with God.
I wanted to become all that He wanted me to be. And I realize I couldn't do that if I was in bondage to my eating habits.
I needed a reason to change that was strong enough to compel me to move right now, not just wait until Monday to get started.
With a strong reason "why" I wanted to change and God on my side, I couldn't lose!
Finally, remember that quote I gave before by Rory Vaden:
"Success is not owned, it's only rented; and the rent is due every day."
- Rory Vaden
Be willing to pay your rent every day so that you can dwell in the best God has for you.
Be blessed with health, healing and wholeness,
