Getting Your House in Order

Stop for a moment and take a look around your house, your desk, or in your purse. Is it neat, clean, and uncluttered? Or are things dirty and in disarray?

Time to get your house in order!

getting your house in order

There is a saying that goes “a peaceful house equals a peaceful mind.”

I think the reverse is true too – a cluttered house equals a cluttered mind.

I’ve proven this over and over again in my own life. If I am feeling confused or depressed, then I stop and look at my environment.

It never fails: My outer world reflects my inner world.

My desk is cluttered, papers are piled up, or washed clothes remain unfolded in a heap.

Now back in the day, I’d ignore the mess for days, sometimes even weeks.

But I’ve learned the quality of my life depends on maintaining peace and order in my environment.

So now, I clean up messes immediately.

The funny thing is, as I learned to stop ignoring the messes in my environment, I learned to stop ignoring myself too.

Getting your house in order not only applies to your outer world but your inner world.

Here is one of my favorite bible verses about getting your house in order:

Through wisdom a house is built,
And by understanding it is established;
By knowledge the rooms are filled
With all precious and pleasant riches.

–  Proverbs 24:3-4

Many people wonder what does it mean Spiritually to get your house in order. Let’s break it down.

Getting your House in Order: Wisdom

Think of wisdom as the cornerstone of your house. A cornerstone is the strength of the house and holds two intersecting walls together.

In the Bible, Jesus is described as the chief cornerstone.

You derive strength from your identity in Him.

From His perspective, you are secure in Him the moment you accept Him as your Savior.

Jesus connects you to the Father.

When God looks at you, it is like a sculptor looking at an unformed block of stone. He doesn’t see you as you are; He sees you as He created you to be.

The Lord had you in mind before the foundation of the world! Think about that. You were not an accident.

He has established your destiny, which is to be conformed to the image of His son Jesus. It is the Holy Spirit’s work in you that is transformational:

being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ;”

– Philippians 1:6

The Bible makes it clear: Living a life of wisdom is the key to happiness. Making wise health choices is part of that.

Getting your House in Order: Understanding

Think of understanding as the support beams and roof of your house.

Understanding comes from the revelation of the Holy Spirit as you study God’s word.

The Holy Spirit instructs you day-by-day, moment by moment, as to what to let into your house and what to keep out.

This is especially true in your thought life. Do not yield any mental real estate to the enemy!

NEVER let the enemy’s lies go unchallenged. I think of it this way:

Suppose you’ve bought a nice, new carpet. The enemy shows up at your front door with a wheelbarrow full of manure and wants to dump it on your new carpet.

Would you let him? No!

Failing to to take your thoughts captive is like allowing the enemy to take a “dump” in your mind. Unfortunately, some people allow him to do it.

No wonder their lives stink!

Again, your outer world reflects your inner world.

That is why it is important to examine your inner voice and discern the Lord’s voice from all others.

If you ignore the Holy Spirit’s voice, your ears become dull and it gets harder to hear Him.

But the good news is that as you seek God with renewed energy and commitment, you will begin to hear the Holy Spirit more fully.

As you listen and follow the guidance He gives, you will walk in step with the Lord more and more each day.

Getting your House in Order: Knowledge

Think of knowledge as the furnishings that add richness, beauty and life to the home. Knowledge is the knowledge of God and Jesus Christ.

As you renew your mind through prayer, praise, worship and study of God’s word, you grow in knowledge and experience unspeakable joy and peace.

This is the very definition of abundant and eternal life – personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ.

He is the source of life.

When you leave your body behind and move to your Heavenly address, you will have even more life because you’ll have more of Him!

As you embrace the Lord through choices that honor Him each day, you embrace life.

You come to know God’s character not just intellectually, but through personal experience.

I hope that you will commit yourself to getting your external and your internal house in order every day.

Monitor the state of each environment and handle any messes immediately.

As you take these positive steps, expect to live in an environment of strength, peace, and joy!

  • Thank you Kimberly for this very important and overlooked message. It explains in detail what I see with my terminally ill patients. Getting your house in order is quite spiritual and often overlooked by all of us including clergy.
I loss my weight with the Lord’s direction too. My best self came from getting all areas of my inner house together.

    • Amen, Rev. De Juana – thank you for posting this confirmation that this is the right word at the right time 🙂

  • Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful knowledge from the Lord. The Lord has been telling me to “Get your house in order.” I’ve often wondered about the true meaning of this. I go back to Hezekiah. But today, in prayer, feeling overwhelmed, I asked the Lord, “What does it really mean to get my house in order?” I decided to research and went to this article. It is very enlightening. Thank you so much! I believe I am on the right track.

  • In June of 2023, I heard the Lord say three things and I heard his voice very clear! 1st He said, there are some new yellow protection glasses that your Dad got in the cupboard to use when mowing the lawn! I said to my self, “ No , there isn’t”! But investigated and yes there was! My ears were perked then! After I mowed the lawn I got a cold glass of water out of the fridge spiket , and as I stood on the porch drinking it down, I heard, “ the water filter in the fridge needs to be changed”! I went back inside to investigate and the light for the filter had come on!!! I knew then that the Lord wanted to get my attention to listen up!!! Then as I peered out the window in the kitchen the 3rd message came…” “Get your house in order” !!! Since then I’ve been trying to find what this was meaning for me! I found this..

The idiom “get your house in order” originated from the Bible, specifically from the Gospel of Matthew, where Jesus tells a group of people to “make the tree good, and its fruit good; or make the tree bad, and its fruit bad; for the tree is known by its fruit.” This phrase has been interpreted as a call to improve …

I thank you for your article and the insight you’ve brought with the Holy Spirit to this subject!! God Bless you Sister❤️✝️‍♂️‼️

    • I praise God for the insight He gave you Robert and appreciate you sharing it here. God loves us and wants His best for us. That is why it is wise to hear and heed Heed His voice even in the smallest matters!

  • Truly I thank God for His peace in my life. I sit on the porch and thank God for His peace. It is a feeling that I cannot describe, its awesome.

  • Thank you Kim, for listening to God and sharing what you hear Jesus saying through the Holy Spirit…you have truly encouraged me to clean up my internal and external environment. I have been a slob in both for a very long time. Thank you so much and I pray God continues to bless you and your family.

    • You are welcome, Milissa! Just remember that you don’t have to do everything at once…a tabletop. a drawer or cabinet shelf makes a difference! You’ll be surprised at how much better you feel with even a small step towards order. May the Lord bless you in this worthy endeavor.

  • I feel the same way, when my outer circumstances is out of order then my perspective on who God is obscured. I lost my home, job and i was diagnosed with some health issues to include I am now living with a friend who doesn’t have her house in order and is allowing her adult grown children bring sin into the home and I feel I am subjected to all this. I am doing everything to live a holy life, consecrate myself in prayer and read His word but many times is difficult..I’m praying for a new place to live.

    • I agree with you in prayer for a new place to live, Millie. In the meantime, I pray God’s peace to guard your heart and mind: “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

    • You are welcome, Felecia! We are all aiming to finish this race well in the Lord and remove any stumbling blocks in the way. If God be for us, who can be against us?

  • Strolling through the website looking for info relating to biblical views on “Get your house in order” and came upon your site. Thank you so much for this inspirational seed. God Bless ❣️

  • Thank you for this much needed confirmation, I was led here by Holy Spirit today. God bless you and your family and ministry ❤️

  • I found your message today by the leading of the Holy Spirit! Everything you wrote resonated with my spirit. Thank you for your insight and encouragement. In Christ, Karen

  • Just what I needed today ❤️ The precious Holy Spirit speaks to us in many ways, and HE certainly speaks through you Kim. God Bless You!

  • My husband has cancer. It was misdiagnosed for almost 2 years. We have only been married for a year and a half. As I type this, he is in the hospital after 2 surgeries and will begin radiation and chemo next week. Still, we praise God! But, my house is a mess. Running back and forth during the last 4 weeks of tests as left a toll on me. Thank you for giving me the ” picture” of what I need to do.

    • Susan, you have my prayers that your husband has a complete recovery and be healed in Jesus name. I am glad this message was a catalyst not only to take care of your outward environment but your physical self to because that will help you to better minister to your husband. May the Lord strengthen, help and uphold you during this trying time.

  • Thanks so much for the great article Kimberley! I love how you relate the 3 components to a house! My husband has Parkinson’s and Dementia and is now in permanent aged care. It seems to be taking me a long time to get my home in order but I feel like I’m getting there. Thank you again! God bless!

    • I am praying for your family during this challenging time, Wendye! May the Lord strengthen, help and uphold you day by day. He is walking with you as you do what is needed to get your house in order in all respects!

  • God is so good and merciful. I have come to realize this as I battled with depression, whenever I had an episode all I had to do was look at my environment and it definitely would reflect how I had been feeling. All of those 3 components have helped me identify and understand why I was exhausted and overwhelmed because my space was extremely unorganized. I’m generally an organized person but during that season it was only his strength that pulled me through Very timely message. Thank you

    • Hi Nikeita – thank you for confirming this word! Whenever I re-organize and clean the house, it feels like a weight lifts off me. I was talking with my husband about how it is so much easier to MAINTAIN the house in order rather than get it in order. So I am diligent now to pay attention to any small messes each day and clean them up so they don’t grow into big messes. It is the same principle for caring for our bodies! Once we get them in order with God’s help, let’s remind ourselves each day to do the work necessary to keep them in order 🙂

  • Thank you for blessing me with this knowledge that I ll follow through .I need this so bad to get closer to the Lord. To put my house in order spiritually and also in the outer side.God bless you.

    • You are welcome, Anamarie – even if you start with something small each day, it gives you energy to start tackling bigger things. Try it and see 🙂

  • I’m glad I read this. There are some parts in order and some parts in disarray. Inconsistent. That’s what my relationship with God has been: inconsistent.

  • Funny this showed up today I had already decided to day be the day to get rid of stuff have three rooms need my attention from Christmas junk and taken a baby bed down been there ten years my last grandchild here turns seven next month not sure when I see my ten month old lives in Nebraska. Virus don’t want me to visit. Other grandkids live out of state as well. When I get all this mess done I know I feel better.

  • This one is right on target: message received! I’m visiting my friend and her house is immaculate. There is such peace. My house is a wreck and has no peace. God’s been whispering to get my house in order and I keep procrastinating. Now, the handwriting is on the wall. I can live in peace and order or chaos and unrest. My choice. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

    • That is wonderful, Ruth! And just remember – you don’t have to do everything at once. Just pick a corner, or a table, or 1 room to start with and work on it a little at a time. Put on some praise music and make it a praise party! As the old saying goes, “By the mile, it’s a trial but by the inch, it’s a cinch.”

  • I love your ideas and have been profoundly blessed by them. Stop saying “be blessed” and start saying God bless you. There is a difference.

    • Thank you for the kind words Mary.

Your comment regarding “Be Blessed” vs. “God Bless You” is intriguing to me; would you care to elaborate?

Personally, I see little difference if any at all.

My reasoning is that ALL blessings comes from God alone in the name of Jesus.

Therefore, if we say “God bless you”, that sounds like either a request to God to bless an individual or a statement of encouragement to an individual that confirms God is still in the blessing business and will/is blessing you.

Now to say “Be blessed” sounds like a confirmation to the latter statement made above, that an individual indeed realizes that their blessings come from God in the name of Jesus and an order/command or instruction has went out for the individual to receive the blessing.

Now I can certainly be off base with my understanding or observations as it were but nonetheless, I simply love this topic and looking forward to your explanation and from others as well.

  • WOW. Yesterday I had a dream that basically told me to “get my house in order” before I do anything else. I was stuck between going outside to build a pile of valuable gifts to leave with versus getting my unlocked house secured & in order. I nervously kept running back and forth between the two, never able to accomplish either task without having something valuable stolen from me. This is a confirmation. Thank you for continuing to share these articles!

  • I really needed this email today. I have been so tired this week (I have learned grief is exhausting) and have let things at my house go and I know the clutter has caused me to have less focus which has spilled into my quiet time with the Lord. Time to refresh and renew my outside environment. I know this will refresh my spirit as well. I love your emails thank you for your ministry. May God continue to bless you as you serve Him.

  • Good morning Kim,
Thank you for your words of encouragement. I spend most of my time regretting things I did not do, it starts when I open my eyes and usually goes all day. I spend time in the word, but leave meditating on the word out. I am a good starting of things, but following through is where I fail. I want the best the Lord has for me, but participating was left undone. Only I can change this. The Lord has equip me with every spiritual blessing that I need to live a life that pleases Him and benefits me. So I am setting things in order starting with my mind and my office.

    Nancy

    • Praise God, Nancy! Put on some praise music and clean off a table. Make it a praise party and you will be done in no time 🙂

  • I totally get it with the white carpet and devil showing up with a wheelbarrow of manure analogy! He just needs our permission to come on in and start dumping it around. It’s up to me to say, “Oh no you don’t! You’re not putting that mess in my beautiful house!” I’m going to call Jesus instead, and ask Him to bring His treasures of love and strength! Amen!

  • I always found that the clutter of stuff caused a distancing of my relationship with the Lord.Once I decluttered His peace would rule again..This Corona virus has certainly opened my eyes as to what is truly important verses just being busy with activities that rob us of time spent with Him..

    • Wonderful, Angie – I am glad this gave you insight. Expect to see change as you put these principles into practice.

    • Jan, I recommend asking the Lord in prayer to open your Spiritual eyes so you can see what He means. It could mean many things from relating to your physical house, to your finances, to your family, to your health. He promised that if we lack wisdom, we can just ask Him and He will give to us liberally and without reproach (see James 1:5). Expect Him to fulfill His word.

    • Hi Jan , I realize this is a bit over a year this post but I had to reply because I too, heard the holy spirit speak to me about getting my house in order . I was a bit taken back by the thought but I had become a bit of a wreck somehow over the past few months . I was crying over my circumstances and not taking my God given authority over my situation . I basically realized I wasn’t trusting God . I allowed alot of confusion get in from the enemy and negative thoughts to creep in thus causing my confusion and sadness. God is so good though in how he helps us. I hope your situation has turned around and your house is in order spiritually and physically. God bless you sister ❤

  • Thanking God for divine and natural order in my life. It can be overwhelming, but I’m believing Step by step. Thank you. Keep allowing God to use you
