Getting Your House in Order

In the Bible, “getting your house in order” means bringing your life into alignment with God’s truth. The phrase appears in Isaiah 38:1 when the prophet Isaiah told King Hezekiah to prepare his house because his life was nearing its end. Spiritually, it refers to examining our priorities, relationships, and habits so that our lives reflect obedience to God.

Getting your house in order is not about perfection. It is about surrender, repentance, and wise stewardship of the life God has given.

Here is what we will cover in this article:

Signs Life Is Out of Order

Sometimes people sense that something is wrong but cannot identify the cause.

Common indicators include:

These signs often indicate that certain areas of life need renewed attention and surrender to God.

Here is a common example with which you may identify.

Stop for a moment and take a look around your house, your desk, or in your purse. Is it neat, clean, and uncluttered? Or are things dirty and in disarray?

getting your house in order

There is a saying that goes “a peaceful house equals a peaceful mind.”

I think the reverse is true too – a cluttered house equals a cluttered mind.

I’ve proven this over and over again in my own life. If I am feeling confused or depressed, then I stop and look at my environment.

It never fails: My outer world reflects my inner world.

My desk is cluttered, papers are piled up, or washed clothes remain unfolded in a heap.

Now back in the day, I’d ignore the mess for days, sometimes even weeks.

But I’ve learned the quality of my life depends on maintaining peace and order in my environment.

So now, I clean up messes immediately.

The funny thing is, as I learned to stop ignoring the messes in my environment, I learned to stop ignoring myself too.

Getting your house in order not only applies to your outer world but your inner world.

Where the Phrase “Get Your House in Order” Comes From

The phrase appears in Isaiah 38:1.

The prophet Isaiah told King Hezekiah:

“Put your house in order, for you shall die, and not live.”

This instruction was not simply about organizing possessions. It meant preparing every area of life before God.

Hezekiah responded with prayer and repentance, and God granted him additional years of life.

The passage reminds believers that life is temporary and stewardship matters.

What It Means Spiritually

Getting your house in order means examining whether our lives reflect obedience to God.

Areas often involved include:

  • Spiritual priorities
  • relationships
  • personal habits
  • financial stewardship
  • physical health
  • emotional healing

When these areas drift away from God’s design, the result is confusion, stress, and instability.

When they return to alignment, peace increases.

Here is one of my favorite Bible verses about getting your house in order Spiritually:

Through wisdom a house is built,
And by understanding it is established;
By knowledge the rooms are filled
With all precious and pleasant riches.

–  Proverbs 24:3-4

Getting your House in Order: Wisdom

Think of wisdom as the cornerstone of your house. A cornerstone is the strength of the house and holds two intersecting walls together.

In the Bible, Jesus is described as the chief cornerstone.

You derive strength from your identity in Him.

From His perspective, you are secure in Him the moment you accept Him as your Savior.

Jesus connects you to the Father.

When God looks at you, it is like a sculptor looking at an unformed block of stone. He doesn’t see you as you are; He sees you as He created you to be.

The Lord had you in mind before the foundation of the world! Think about that. You were not an accident.

He has established your destiny, which is to be conformed to the image of His son Jesus. It is the Holy Spirit’s work in you that is transformational:

being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ;”

– Philippians 1:6

The Bible makes it clear: Living a life of wisdom is the key to happiness. Making wise health choices is part of that.

Getting your House in Order: Understanding

Think of understanding as the support beams and roof of your house.

Understanding comes from the revelation of the Holy Spirit as you study God’s word.

The Holy Spirit instructs you day-by-day, moment by moment, as to what to let into your house and what to keep out.

This is especially true in your thought life. Do not yield any mental real estate to the enemy!

NEVER let the enemy’s lies go unchallenged. I think of it this way:

Suppose you’ve bought a nice, new carpet. The enemy shows up at your front door with a wheelbarrow full of manure and wants to dump it on your new carpet.

Would you let him? No!

Failing to to take your thoughts captive is like allowing the enemy to take a “dump” in your mind. Unfortunately, some people allow him to do it.

No wonder their lives stink!

Again, your outer world reflects your inner world.

That is why it is important to examine your inner voice and discern the Lord’s voice from all others.

If you ignore the Holy Spirit’s voice, your ears become dull and it gets harder to hear Him.

But the good news is that as you seek God with renewed energy and commitment, you will begin to hear the Holy Spirit more fully.

As you listen and follow the guidance He gives, you will walk in step with the Lord more and more each day.

Getting your House in Order: Knowledge

Think of knowledge as the furnishings that add richness, beauty and life to the home. Knowledge is the knowledge of God and Jesus Christ.

As you renew your mind through prayer, praise, worship and study of God’s word, you grow in knowledge and experience unspeakable joy and peace.

This is the very definition of abundant and eternal life – personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ.

He is the source of life.

When you leave your body behind and move to your Heavenly address, you will have even more life because you’ll have more of Him!

As you embrace the Lord through choices that honor Him each day, you embrace life.

You come to know God’s character not just intellectually, but through personal experience.

I hope that you will commit yourself to getting your external and your internal house in order every day.

Monitor the state of each environment and handle any messes immediately.

As you take these positive steps, expect to live in an environment of strength, peace, and joy!

How to Get Your House in Order Biblically

  3. Repair broken relationships where possible.

The Secret Life of Negative Thinking

A young man once wrote me about his secret life of negative thoughts and depression.iStock_000019450819_Small

He described his negative thinking as like an 800-pound gorilla, beating him up with nasty put-downs that told him he was no good, he was ugly, and no matter what he tried he could not change.

In a flash, I saw the similarities in what he wrote to how I imagined myself as a shy teenager.

Back then, I saw myself as a princess trapped in a stone tower, with an evil dragon terrorizing me.

No matter how I much I tried to escape the tower, the dragon was there. He had fearsome claws and breathed fire.

My situation depressed me too. Darkness surrounded me and I could not see the way out. I even had suicidal thoughts back then.

But one day, I had a startling revelation and it was the key to my freedom.

It was true that I was the princess. However, I was also the dragon.

The lies I chose to believe about myself and my situation were what kept me trapped.

I always had the power to choose what to believe.

Out of ignorance, I was aligning myself with the devil (the father of lies) who was out to destroy me as God’s precious child.

I praise God today that He showed me the truth and delivered me! Proverbs 23:7 says:

For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.”

I believe that God gave you the imagination to help you strengthen your faith. It is a gift. If you use this gift wisely, you create mental pictures of your better future and encourage yourself moment by moment. You then feel stronger and move forward toward your future with confidence.

However, if you abuse your imagination with pictures that inspire fear, by putting yourself down, or by entertaining worry and negativity then you too will have an 800-pound gorilla standing in the way of the hope and future God wants you to have.

Remember this: As a believer, you have the power of God through Jesus Christ living inside of you.

Not only do you have the ability to take your thoughts captive to the obedience of Jesus Christ, but you have the responsibility to do it.

You might think this is a small habit that hurts only yourself. But it is not. This habit impacts everyone that God has placed in your life for you to bless. You are blessed to be a blessing!

Today, resolve to use your imagination to strengthen your faith and encourage yourself. That way, you will position yourself to receive God’s best as he gives you a future that is better than you can imagine!

But as it is written: ‘Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.'” – 1 Corinthians 2:9

Recovering from Weight Loss Setbacks

how to lose body fatOne of the hallmarks of an Overcomer is the ability to recover from setbacks quickly. The question is, how will you recover?

I’ve got a few words of wisdom that can help you going forward regarding Christian weight loss goals.

1. Examine where you slipped.

An African Proverb says, “Don’t look where you fell; look where you slipped.” How many times have you condemned yourself for failures? It is a waste of energy.

Instead ask yourself, “How can I prevent this from happening again?” When you put your energy into examining where the slip occurred, you can take steps to cleaning up that area of your life.

As someone who tried and failed for over 20 years to lose and maintain weight loss, I understand failure intimately. Condemning myself did not help. In fact, it only depressed me and made me want to engage in the very behavior that made me gain weight from the start.

However, when I gave myself grace for my mistakes and committed to never giving up on myself, then I was able to succeed.

That’s the point of any successful effort.

2. Create a “slip-prevention” plan.

After finding out where you slipped, then get specific about what you can do the next time to prevent the same thing from happening again. I’ve got news for you – chances are, you are slipping in the same places over and over again.

If you face that reality and make a plan for dealing with it using simple, doable steps, not only will you be able to recover from the mistake, but you will be victorious if faced with that situation again.

And if you lack wisdom on how to create a “slip-prevention” plan, then ask God in prayer to guide you. James 1:5 assures you that God gives wisdom liberally to those who ask for it.

In addition, get wisdom from those who have achieved what you want. According to Proverbs 11:14, “Where there is no counsel, the people fall; But in the multitude of counselors there is safety.”

3. Become accountable.

You need to have a means to keep yourself accountable for following through on your “slip-prevention” plan. Confess your slip to a supportive, compassionate friend or family member and tell them what you are doing to recover from the slip.

Or if you prefer, keep a journal so that you can write down your progress in handling the slip.

Wherever you can get Christian weight loss support, take advantage of those resources.

4. Confess your victory every morning.

I recently discovered that the word “confess” means “to say the same” in Greek.

You simply say what God says. One of the most confident statements in the bible is this: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13).

That is what God’s word says, so you say the same thing every morning.

5. Continually renew your mind to support your victorious attitude.

You will have thoughts that contradict your confession. Count on it. But just like plucking weeds from a garden, you must replace thoughts that contradict the new way you want to think and act.

The only way to renew your mind consistently is through God’s word.

When you know what it says, then you can say it, and when you say it, then you can do it.

I heard a motivational speaker once say, “A setback is a set up for a comeback.”

So if you commit to doing the above steps, your comeback is right now!

You are Someone’s Answer

girls-591552_1280I had something strange happen to me a few years ago. I went outside to take out the trash, and the sky captured my attention. It had an otherworldly appearance and I’ve never seen anything like it.

It was covered with dense, thick, dark clouds, like a heavy blanket. Yet in the midst of the cloud blanket, there was a narrow strip of blue. And in that blue the sun was shining as bright as I have ever seen it, primarily because its light was concentrated in that one area.

I paused to look around my neighborhood. The effects from the sky on the neighborhood was a peculiar mix of sunshine and shadow. It captivated me so much that I sat down on the bench outside of my front door. Then, I heard the Lord clearly say to me that what I was seeing is what is happening in the world now.

Storm clouds are gathering. The world is only going to get darker, but it is an opportunity for his people to shine brighter. The brightness of the light will draw others to us who are looking for a way out of the darkness. And we must be ready.

After He said that, I said out loud, “I will shine for you Lord.”

Then I went back into the house. A little later, I walked past my windows and out of curiosity decided to look out of the front door to see if the sky was the same. But the sun was now hidden and the clouds had completely taken over.

This experience made me recall this scripture from Proverbs 22:17-21, which I had just read a few days prior in my private bible study:

Incline your ear and hear the words of the wise,
And apply your heart to my knowledge;
For it is a pleasant thing if you keep them within you;
Let them all be fixed upon your lips,
So that your trust may be in the LORD;
I have instructed you today, even you.
Have I not written to you excellent things
Of counsels and knowledge,
That I may make you know the certainty of the words of truth,
That you may answer words of truth
To those who send to you?

As the scripture says, we must be ready to answer words of truth to those who come to us. You are someone’s answer because you contain God’s word of truth within you. You are like the sunshine, a beacon in times of darkness.

If this currently does not describe you and you desire it, it is not too late. Ask the Lord to awaken within you a hunger to study his word. One thing I always ask before I study is for God to prepare the soil of my heart, and make it good ground. I ask him to break up the fallow ground and stony places, and to remove any thorns or weeds (worries and cares) that might choke the word and prevent it from flourishing there.

I ask him to sink the high quality seed of his word deep into my heart so that I understand it and build up my character so that when troubles come, I will have root within myself to endure them. And I ask God to help me to cultivate his word in my heart so that I bring forth a 100-fold return of righteousness, peace, and joy, giving glory to his kingdom.

TBYT is about encouraging God’s people to choose the way of health in every respect, physically, mentally, and spiritually. As you know, I was once 240 pounds. Back then I was so focused on my own unhappiness with my weight – low energy, depression, and aches and pains that came with it that it hindered me from being about my Father’s business.

While at first I cared only about reaching my ideal weight for appearances sake, now I realize it is about much more than that. It is about taking care of my health so that I can be of more use for the kingdom. It was about removing this clear hindrance to me fulfilling my calling.

I knew that I could be someone’s answer if I could only look past myself and in humility recognize that I could not overcome my food addiction by myself. I needed God’s help. And in surrendering to him, he came through for me and is enabling me to use my painful experiences to write to you today.

So please, ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to you today if there are any habits that you are harboring that are hindering you from your destiny, which is to become someone’s answer by drawing them to Christ.

The time is short, but you can redeem the time. I urge you to start today, for your sake and for those you are destined to help.

“I’ll take care of me for you, if you’ll take care of you for me.” – Jim Rohn

A Wall of Defense

This is an excerpt from an email I sent to a friend of mine this morning. I’m so excited by the concept that I had to post it:

“God just gave me an awesome revelation about the role of health and the body. I have been studying Nehemiah on and off for several months because the phrase ‘Let us rise up and build” from Nehemiah 2:18 has echoed in my spirit. This is what He said:

Our health is a wall of defense to protect our bodies.

Many of us are like cities with broken down walls because we haven’t kept up that wall of protection. The way we keep that wall of protection is through eating a healthy diet daily (lots of fruits and vegetables, water, whole grains, and small/moderate amounts of lean protein) and exercising regularly. If we don’t and our walls are broken down, then the enemy is free to come in and attack our bodies all he wants.

That’s what’s happening right now. The enemy is having a field day…diabetes, heart disease, strokes are increasing at alarming rates. So my ministry is about inspiring others to rise up and build that wall of health to protect our bodies. And as a wellness architect, we can show them how.”

One of the most profound scriptures is Proverbs 25:28 “Whoever has no rule over his own spirit is like a city broken down, without walls.”

I think each of us should purpose in our hearts that we will start rebuilding this wall of health to protect our bodies. Our lives and those of our families and communities depend on it.
